Most South Indian breakfast recipes are healthy or can be made healthy by replacing all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour. 1. Idli

4. Vada

Crispy vada made with ginger, green chillies, whole coriander seeds, flavored chana dal and urad dal. 5. Ven Pongal

Ven pongal or Khara pongal is a very popular Indian dish from South India, Tamil Nadu, especially made with rice and pulses, made with whole black pepper, cumin, curry, ginger, green chillies and roasted cashews. It is served with sambar and coconut chutney. Ven pongal is a very simple, healthy and delicious rice dish.


6. Sarva Pindi

Rice flour pancake from the state of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, which bursts with the flavors of ginger, garlic, green chilies, curry leaves, and coriander leaves, has the bite of chana dal, sesame seeds, roasted peanuts, etc.. is Sarva Pindi. It is also known as Ginnappa / Tapala Pindi.


7. Uttapam

Thick pancake with crispy edges and smooth and fluffy insides topped with vegetables, a popular South Indian breakfast, is vegetable uttapam. In my opinion, it is the third most popular South Indian food item after idli and dosa. I use regular battar for my idli, dosa, uttapam and other recipes. This recipe also uses leftover idli dosa batter.



8. Chettinad Appam

Fluffy, soft and very tasty, this Chettinad-style appam is one to bookmark for your breakfast. With a soft and thick centerpiece and a paper-thin exterior, appam can be paired well with sambar or vegetable stew.


9. Dibba Rotti or Minapa Rotti

This is a very interesting, healthy and delicious recipe from the state of Andhra Pradesh. Dibba roti is also known as Minapa rotti. It is made with urad dal and idli ravva. It is crisp like dosa from the outside and soft and fluffy like idli from the inside. It can be served for breakfast with chutney or pickle. You may also like dibba rotti using idli batter.



10. Pathiri

Pathiri is a chapati made with rice flour. I am sharing the recipe here for a deep-fried pathiri called neypathiri from the Malabar region. Pathiri is a perfectly flavored deep fried recipe made using rice flour. It has the wonderful taste of hot chilies and the subtle and fruity taste of fresh coconut.
