What is the Omicron? 

The Omicron variant of COVID-19 has been called a variant of concern by WHO based on the evidence that it has several mutations that may have an impact on how it behaves. There is still considerable uncertainty regarding Omicron and a lot of research is being done to assess its transmission, severity and risk of re-infection.

The Omicron COVID-19 variant was first reported in South Africa on 25th November 2021. It is quickly spreading around the world. The World Health Organization announced Omicron to be a COVID-19 variant of concern based on preliminary evidence that is spreads quickly.

The Omicron variant is now found in many countries around the world. The WHO reports that Omicron is probably present in most countries, Although it has not been identified yet.

The new variant of COVID-19, Omicron was first reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) from South Africa on November 25th 2021. As per WHO, the first case known confirmed B.1.1.529 infection was from a spicemen collected on Novermber 9th 2021.

On November 26, the WHO named the new COVID-19 varaiant B.1.1.529, which has been identified in South Africa, as Omicron. The WHO has classified Omicron as a variant of concern. So many of countries have imposed travel restrictions on the Sounthern African Countries since the mutation was discovered.

The new Omicron variant has been confirmed in more than 25 countries and their number is expected to increase, - Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus (Director-General of the WHO) had said.



Does the Omicron variant have different symptoms? However, What are some symptoms of the Omicron Variant? 

There is no information to suggest that Omicron causes COVID-19 symptoms that are different from other COVID-19 variants. 

But the four most common symptoms of the Omicron variant are cough, faigue, congestion and runny nose, according to the CDC analysis of the first 43 cases investigated in the US. People with COVID-19 can report a variety of symptoms, with cough and smell loss emerging as two frequent indicators of the virus.



How did Omicron variant develop?

When the virus spreads widely and causes many infections, the chances of the virus mutating increases. The more opportunities a virus has to spread, the more chances it has to undergo changes.

New variants like Omicron are a reminder that the COVID-19 pendemic is not over. It is therefore imperative that people get the vaccine when it is available to them and continue to follow existing advice on preventing the spread of the virus such as physical distance, wearing masks, washing hands regularly and ventilating indoor areas well.

Is the Omicron variant more severe than the previous COVID-19 variants?

Early research suggests that the Omicron may be less intense than the Delta variant, but more data is needed and the WHO warns not to dismiss it as mild. Studies are ongoing and will be updated when this information becomes available.

It is important to remember that all types of COVID-19 variants, including the Delta variant that still dominates the world, can cause serious illness or deaths, so it is important to prevent the spread of the virus and reduce your risk of contracting the virus.

    The variant of interest is those variants due to which significant community transmission of covid-19 can be seen. Or it may even affect the transmissibility or the severity of the virus. These variants may be potentially problematic. Currently, there are 2 variants of interest according to the WHO.
